About This Lodge

Ihamba Lakeside Lodge sits on the shores of Lake George, offering a quiet perspective of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The property is defined by its cooling breezes and the steady presence of the water, providing a sharp contrast to the dry savannah plains found elsewhere in the park.

It functions as a retreat for those who prefer the rhythmic sounds of a lakeside environment over the typical bush camp atmosphere. The design is simple and intentional, focusing on the expansive views of the water and the distant Rwenzori Mountains. It serves as a practical yet comfortable gateway for exploring the diverse habitats of the western rift valley, from the wetlands of the lake to the nearby craters and plains.

Location & Setting

The lodge is located near the fishing village of Kahendero on the edge of Lake George. This positioning places guests in a transition zone where the aquatic life of the lake meets the terrestrial wildlife of the national park. The setting is relatively flat, allowing for easy movement around the grounds and uninterrupted lines of sight across the water.

The lodge is easily accessible from the main road connecting Kasese and Mbarara, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through western Uganda. The immediate surroundings are characterized by papyrus swamps and local greenery, creating a peaceful atmosphere away from the higher-density tourist areas of the Mweya Peninsula.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of individual stone cottages that use local materials to blend into the shoreline. Each room is spacious and features a private wooden deck that faces Lake George, allowing guests to watch the changing light over the water. The interiors are clean and functional, with large windows that encourage natural ventilation and provide a constant visual connection to the landscape.

Large stone bathrooms provide a sense of permanence and grounding. The cottages are spaced apart to ensure privacy, connected by well-maintained paths that wind through the gardens. The layout ensures that every guest has a personal vantage point to observe the birdlife and the occasional hippo that wanders near the shore.

Facilities & Experiences

The central area of the lodge houses a large dining room and a lounge area with high ceilings, designed to stay cool during the afternoon heat. An outdoor swimming pool is positioned near the lake edge, offering a space to relax between morning and evening game drives. The service is personal and attentive, reflecting the small-scale nature of the lodge.

Meals often feature local ingredients, served in a setting that prioritizes the natural views. The deck area becomes a central gathering point in the evenings, where the lack of light pollution provides excellent conditions for stargazing over the lake. It is a place that encourages a slower pace, where the environment dictates the daily schedule.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge maintains a dedicated buffer zone between the guest areas and the lake shore to protect the nesting grounds of local aquatic birds. By actively managing this shoreline without harsh landscaping, the property allows natural filtration of water and supports the local fish populations that the Kahendero community relies on. This approach ensures that the delicate balance of the Ramsar-protected wetland remains intact for both wildlife and people.
