About This Lodge

Elephant Plains Lodge sits on a high ridge within the Queen Elizabeth National Park, overlooking the Kikorongo Lake. The lodge is shaped by its altitude and the wide views it provides over the park’s savannah and the Equator line. The design is simple and sturdy, using local stone and timber to blend with the surrounding landscape.

The atmosphere is quiet and open, offering a sense of scale that matches the plains below. It serves as a practical and comfortable base for exploring the diverse habitats of the park, from the crater lakes to the open grasslands. The focus here is on the perspective provided by the height of the ridge, allowing guests to watch the weather and wildlife movements across the horizon from a calm vantage point.

Location & Setting

The lodge is located on the edge of the park, positioned precisely to offer views of both Lake George and Lake Edward in the distance. This location on the western arm of the Great Rift Valley means the air is often fresh and the vistas are expansive. The immediate environment is characterized by short grass and shrubs, which are frequently visited by elephants and buffalo moving toward the water.

The lodge is easily accessible from the main road yet feels isolated due to its elevation. It sits near the Kikorongo Equator monument, making it a central point for trips to the Kazinga Channel or the northern explosion craters.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of six double or twin cottages and two large family units, all built with spacious floor plans and large windows. Each unit is constructed from local volcanic stone and has a high thatched roof that helps keep the rooms cool. The interiors are functional and uncluttered, featuring wide glass doors that open onto private wooden decks.

These decks are the main feature of the rooms, positioned to catch the breeze and provide a clear view of the plains. The en-suite bathrooms are large and include deep tubs with views of the park. The distance between the cottages ensures privacy and a feeling of being alone with the landscape.

Facilities & Experiences

The main building houses the dining area, bar, and lounge, all designed with an open-air concept to maximize the view. A large swimming pool is set into the edge of the garden, appearing to drop off into the savannah below. The service is relaxed and efficient, catering to the early schedules of safari travellers.

Meals are often served on the terrace, allowing for birdwatching during breakfast. In the evenings, the lounge area becomes a quiet space for reading or reviewing the day’s photographs. The lodge maintains a steady, peaceful energy, avoiding the crowds often found in lower-lying camps while remaining close to the park’s main gates.

This helps maintain the local insect and lizard populations, which are vital for the ridge’s birdlife. Additionally, the lodge supports a local women’s group that crafts the unique stone carvings found throughout the property, providing a market for specialized masonry skills that are traditional to the Kikorongo area.
