About This Lodge

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is a pioneer of the safari experience, being the first lodge ever built inside a Kenyan National Park. Located in the heart of Tsavo West, its identity is built around its classic stone architecture and its legendary position facing a highly active waterhole. The lodge feels steady and established, offering a sense of history and reliable comfort amidst the wild, volcanic terrain.

The atmosphere is one of quiet luxury, where the focus remains on the constant arrival of wildlife to the water’s edge. It provides a grounded and trustworthy base for exploring the diverse landscapes of the park, from lava flows to springs. The experience is defined by the seamless transition between the lodge’s cool, stone-walled interiors and the warm, vibrant life of the African bush that unfolds just yards away.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated near the Mtito Andei Gate of Tsavo West National Park, overlooking the Chyulu Hills. The geography is marked by the dramatic contrast between the dark Shetani lava flows and the golden savannah.

It sits in a prime location for accessing the park’s most iconic landmarks, including Mzima Springs. The setting is anchored by the waterhole, which serves as a vital magnet for animals in this semi-arid environment, ensuring a consistent wildlife presence throughout the year.

Accommodation

The 56 guest rooms are constructed from local volcanic stone, which keeps the interiors naturally cool in the Tsavo heat. Each room is designed to be spacious and light, with large windows and private balconies that look out over either the waterhole or the rolling hills.

The decor uses warm earth tones and traditional African motifs, creating a soft and relaxed atmosphere. Every room includes modern en suite facilities, ensuring a high level of comfort and privacy while maintaining a close connection to the sensory sights and sounds of the park.

Facilities & Experiences

The central dining and bar areas are built into a long, thatched veranda that offers an uninterrupted view of the waterhole. This shared space is the heart of the lodge, where guests can watch herds of buffalo and elephants during lunch or evening drinks.

The lodge features a large swimming pool set within landscaped gardens, providing a peaceful retreat. The service is professional and warm, reflecting decades of hospitality excellence. An evening spent on the viewing deck watching the sun set over the Chyulu Hills is a signature Kilaguni experience.

The lodge also manages its own reforestation program, planting indigenous trees to help restore the volcanic soil surrounding the property. These practical measures ensure the long-term health of the delicate Tsavo West ecosystem while maintaining the lodge’s low-impact footprint.
