About This Lodge

Mahogany Springs Lodge sits on the edge of the Munyaga River, providing a grounded and practical base for exploring the northern sector of Bwindi. The property is named after the ancient trees that dominate the skyline, and its design reflects a commitment to open space and clear views. It operates with a quiet efficiency that suits the serious nature of forest trekking.

The atmosphere is calm and focused, acting as a transition point between the comforts of a modern lodge and the dense, prehistoric greenery of the national park. Everything here is built to a scale that feels substantial without being imposing, ensuring the forest remains the primary focus of every stay.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated in the Buhoma sector, which is the most established area for gorilla tracking in Uganda. It occupies a plot of land that slopes gently toward the river, offering a sense of openness that is rare in such a thick forest environment. The Munyaga River flows along the boundary, providing a constant soundtrack of moving water.

Because it is located just outside the park gates, access to the trekking briefing point is quick and straightforward. The setting provides a clear line of sight across the valley to the dark, mist-covered ridges of the Impenetrable Forest, giving guests a constant visual reminder of the terrain they have come to explore.

Accommodation

The suites are housed in large stone and wood buildings with high thatched roofs. Each room is designed to maximize internal space, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and wide wooden doors that open onto private terraces. The furniture is locally crafted and heavy, matching the sturdy architecture.

The beds are positioned to face the forest, allowing the morning light and the sounds of the canopy to enter the room naturally. Bathrooms are spacious and include modern fixtures, focusing on functionality and ease of use after a long day in the bush. The overall feel is one of privacy and solidity, providing a reliable retreat from the humid forest air.

Facilities & Experiences

The main building serves as the social heart of the lodge, containing a large lounge, a dining area, and a bar centered around a double-sided fireplace. The wrap-around terrace is the primary gathering spot, where guests watch the mist roll off the mountains in the early morning. Service is organized and professional, with a team that understands the specific needs of trekkers.

Dining is a mix of international and local flavors, served in a relaxed environment that encourages conversation between travelers. The lodge also features a small shop selling local crafts and a library focused on the natural history of the region, adding a layer of depth to the stay.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge operates an on-site nursery that cultivates indigenous saplings to replace invasive species in the surrounding valley. By focusing on the “Homegrown” initiative, the kitchen sources specific heirloom crops that are no longer common in commercial markets, providing a reliable income stream for elderly farmers in the village. This project helps maintain the genetic diversity of the local food supply while ensuring the flavors served at the table remain tied to the specific soil of Buhoma.
