About This Lodge

Ngulia Safari Lodge is a classic, stone-built establishment that occupies one of the most dramatic vantage points in Tsavo West. Perched on the edge of the Ndawe Escarpment, it offers a grand perspective of the rugged landscape below, stretching toward the rhino sanctuary. The lodge is characterized by its historical presence and its steady, reliable atmosphere, making it a staple for those exploring the “Land of Lava and Man-eaters.”

It provides a functional and comfortable base that focuses on the raw beauty of the park’s geography. The experience here is defined by the proximity to the jagged Ngulia Hills and the frequent visits from leopards to the lodge’s baiting station, offering a unique, predictable encounter with one of Africa’s most elusive cats in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated deep within Tsavo West National Park, overlooking the vast Rhino Valley. Its elevation on the escarpment provides natural cooling and a sweeping view of the volcanic landscape, including the nearby Five Sisters hills. It is easily accessible from the Tsavo River Gate and the main highway connecting Nairobi and Mombasa.

The surrounding terrain is a mix of dense scrub and open plains, punctuated by the ancient, dark flows of the Shetani Lava. This central location makes it a strategic hub for reaching Mzima Springs and the park’s diverse wildlife corridors.

Accommodation

The lodge offers 52 standard rooms, each featuring a private balcony that faces the expansive valley and the leopard-feeding trees. The rooms are designed with a focus on simplicity and durability, using local stone and wood to create a cool retreat from the Tsavo heat.

The décor is traditional and unassuming, providing a clean and spacious environment for rest after long game drives. Guests can enjoy the sensory experience of watching the light change over the escarpment at dawn, with the large windows ensuring that the landscape remains the primary focus of the room.

Facilities & Experiences

The main building features a large, open-air bar and dining room that maximizes the cliff-side views. The standout experience at Ngulia is the evening leopard viewing; the lodge has a long-standing tradition of placing bait on a nearby tree, often attracting these predators just yards from the dining deck.

A large swimming pool set into the hillside offers a panoramic spot to relax between excursions. The atmosphere is lively and communal, particularly in the evenings when guests gather to watch the waterhole below, which is frequently visited by elephants and buffalo under floodlights.
