About This Lodge

Saruni Samburu is an architectural retreat built into the massive granite boulders of the Kalama Conservancy, offering a high-altitude perspective over the northern frontier. The property is defined by its dramatic elevation, providing a quiet and steady connection to the vastness of the Samburu ecosystem. It avoids the typical lowland heat by capturing cool breezes and offering expansive views that stretch toward Mount Kenya.

The atmosphere is grounded yet sophisticated, focusing on a sense of space and silence that is rare in busier safari circuits. Guests experience a blend of modern design and ancient landscape, where the physical structure of the lodge feels like a natural extension of the mountain. It serves as a sanctuary for those seeking a contemplative and private encounter with the wild, far from the crowds of the main reserve.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated atop a rocky outcrop within the private Kalama Conservancy, bordering Samburu National Reserve to the north. Geographically, it occupies a commanding position overlooking a private corridor used by migratory wildlife. Access is primarily through the Kalama airstrip, followed by a short, scenic drive through the rugged, arid terrain.

The setting is characterized by prehistoric volcanic rock formations and sparse, resilient vegetation that defines the northern Kenyan landscape. Its elevation ensures panoramic visibility across the plains, while its location within a private conservancy allows for a more secluded and controlled environment compared to the public reserve.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of six large villas, each sculpted into the natural rock to ensure privacy and unique views. The design utilizes open-fronted walls to remove any barrier between the guest and the horizon, allowing natural light and air to flow freely through the living spaces. Interiors feature a mix of stone, wood, and local textures, creating a soft and organic feel.

Each villa includes a spacious lounge area and a private veranda that serves as a personal observatory. The sensory experience is centered on the sound of the wind through the rocks and the visual depth of the starlit sky, providing a profound sense of isolation and comfort.

Facilities & Experiences

Life at Saruni Samburu centers on two infinity pools that appear to spill over the edge of the cliffs into the valley below. The main lounge and dining areas are open-air, fostering a relaxed and communal atmosphere where the scenery remains the primary focus. A dedicated spa provides treatments inspired by local plants and traditions, emphasizing physical well-being in a quiet setting.

The service is awesome, reflecting the steady pace of the northern desert. Evenings are often spent on the dining deck, where the absence of light pollution offers a clear view of the celestial landscape, grounding the stay in the natural rhythms of the earth.
