About This Lodge

Buhoma Lodge is an established and grounded retreat positioned at the primary gateway to the northern sector of Bwindi. The property draws its identity from its immediate proximity to the national park, offering a seamless transition between the comforts of the lodge and the dense, prehistoric environment of the forest.

The atmosphere is purposeful and quiet, reflecting the serious and physical nature of gorilla trekking in the Albertine Rift. The architecture uses local stone and reclaimed timber to create a sense of permanence that mirrors the ancient trees surrounding the site. It serves as a reliable and unpretentious base for those who value location and a direct, sensory connection to the wild forest canopy.

Location & Setting

The lodge sits on a gentle slope overlooking the Buhoma valley, located just steps away from the park headquarters where trekking briefings begin. The geography is defined by steep, mist-covered ridges and the dark greenery of the Impenetrable Forest, which forms a constant visual backdrop.

The Munyaga River flows nearby, adding the steady sound of moving water to the environment. Access is usually through Kihihi Airstrip followed by a drive through the rural Ugandan highlands, positioning the lodge in a transition zone between local agricultural life and the protected wilderness. The air here is cool and humid, often filled with the calls of forest-dwelling primates and birds.

Accommodation

The lodge features ten individual chalets built into the hillside to maximize privacy and views. Each unit is constructed from local stone and wood with high-pitched thatched roofs, creating a spacious and airy interior. Large windows and private verandas allow guests to watch the mist rise off the forest canopy directly from their rooms.

The decor is functional and warm, focusing on the textures of the landscape rather than unnecessary ornamentation. Each chalet includes a large en suite bathroom with a focus on reliable hot water, which is a practical necessity after a day of trekking in the damp forest air.

Facilities & Experiences

You stay at the lodge centers on the large, open-plan lounge and dining area anchored by a central fireplace. The fireplace is the heart of the property during cool evenings, where guests gather to share stories of their forest encounters. A wide terrace offers expansive views across the valley, making it a popular spot for morning coffee or evening reflection.

The service style is professional and organized, catering specifically to the logistical needs of forest explorers. Dining is communal and unhurried, emphasizing fresh local flavors in a setting that remains deeply connected to the sounds and rhythms of the surrounding rainforest.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

Buhoma Lodge operates a specialized resource-sharing program that provides the local community with filtered water, reducing the dependence on the nearby river. The lodge also partners with the village artisan cooperative to host woodcarving demonstrations, ensuring that traditional craftsmanship remains a viable alternative to forest clearing for the younger generation. By maintaining an indigenous buffer zone on the property, the lodge creates a protected habitat for the rare butterflies and small mammals that move between the community farms and the national park.
