About This Lodge

Drunken Elephant Mara is a rustic bush camp located just outside the main reserve. Its quirky name is inspired by the elephants that wander the area, often feasting on fermented Marula fruits. The camp offers a down-to-earth atmosphere where the focus is on a genuine connection with nature rather than high-end luxury.

The property is owner-managed, ensuring a personal and flexible experience where guests are not bound by rigid hotel schedules. It serves as a relaxed hideaway for those wanting to escape the city and enjoy the wild in a simple, comfortable setting.

Location & Setting

The camp is situated in a natural forest along a riverbank, only five minutes from the Sekenani Gate. This proximity allows for quick entry into the Masai Mara National Reserve for game viewing.

The grounds are shaded by indigenous trees, providing a cool retreat from the midday sun. Guests arrive by road from Nairobi, a drive of about five to six hours, or by air to the nearby Keekorok Airstrip.

Accommodation

There are seven safari tents, each raised on a wooden deck, to provide good views and safety. The tents are spacious and include en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers heated by traditional log fires.

Each unit features a private balcony where guests can sit and listen to the sounds of the bush. The setup is designed to be functional and comfortable, offering a “glamping” style experience that bridges the gap between camping and a lodge stay.

Facilities & Experiences

The main area includes a restaurant and a well-stocked bar where guests gather to share stories. A swimming pool offers a place to cool off after a dusty game drive.

Meals are often served as set menus with a mix of international and local dishes. The camp operates on solar power for lighting, ensuring a low-impact energy footprint while maintaining well-lit tents.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The camp is located within the Siana Conservancy area, where land is owned by approximately 3,700 local households. By operating here, the camp contributes directly to these families, ensuring that tourism revenue supports the wider community rather than just a single entity. The property also utilizes traditional wood-fired “donkey boilers” for water heating, a simple method that reduces reliance on electricity and fossil fuels.
