About This Lodge

Elephant Pepper Camp is an intimate safari camp known for its classic design and remote setting. It offers an exclusive, low-density experience far removed from busier tourist areas. The camp is entirely non-permanent, reflecting a philosophy of minimal impact that prioritizes the uninterrupted wilderness experience.

The atmosphere is quiet and focused entirely on wildlife immersion. Its small size encourages an authentic, communal safari feel, often allowing guests to dine and share stories with owners and expert guides.

Location & Setting

The camp is situated in the Mara North Conservancy, a private area bordering the main Masai Mara National Reserve. It is shaded by a natural grove of Elephant Pepper and fig trees, from which it takes its name.

The camp is unfenced, allowing animals to wander freely through the grounds. Its position within the conservancy provides access to prime game-viewing areas, with a strict limit on the number of vehicles, ensuring a private safari experience. Access is typically by flight to the Mara North Airstrip.

Accommodation

The camp has ten spacious Meru-style canvas tents, including two larger suites for families or honeymooners. The tents are well-spaced for privacy.

Interiors feature dark wood and simple brass fittings, evoking a traditional safari feel. Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom with a safari shower and flushing toilet, plus a private veranda often equipped with a comfortable hammock for afternoon rest.

Facilities & Experiences

The central lounge and dining tents have roll-up sides, allowing the sounds of the bush to enter. Meals are often served at a long, common table, featuring cuisine with a Northern Italian influence alongside fresh local dishes. A traditional campfire is lit nightly for evening drinks and conversation. The camp has no permanent structures, such as a pool or spa, ensuring a simple and authentic bush experience.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The camp played a crucial role in establishing the Mara North Conservancy, ensuring stable lease payments to over 800 local Maasai land-owning families, thereby maintaining the land’s open status for wildlife. The entire camp structure is designed to be fully dismantled during the annual closure months, leaving no permanent trace on the ground below. Through the Land & Life Foundation, the camp maintains a dedicated program to support the local Ololomei Primary School, providing infrastructure and supplies based on specific community needs.
