About This Lodge

Mara Plains Camp offers an exclusive experience set within Kenya’s Olare Motorogi Conservancy, a vast, private area known for its outstanding density of big cats. The atmosphere is confident and quietly luxurious, pairing sophisticated design with a singular focus on the wild environment.

Situated close to the Masai Mara National Reserve boundary, the small camp size and low vehicle count ensure an intimate, personal safari. The experience is tailored to the guest’s rhythm, with no fixed schedule or set mealtimes. This retreat attracts those who value privacy and unparalleled wildlife access in a setting that feels authentic yet refined.

Location & Setting

The camp sits in riverine forest along a bend in the Ntiakitiak River, providing both seclusion and a natural wildlife corridor. Guests access the property by crossing a wide suspension bridge, which establishes the sense of arrival into a private sanctuary.

Olare Motorogi is a 13,300-hectare conservancy that shares an unfenced border with the Maasai Mara National Reserve, offering access to both the protected concession and the larger reserve. The nearest access point is the Ol Kiombo Airstrip, followed by a short road transfer to camp.

Accommodation

Mara Plains Camp features seven spacious, octagonal canvas suites, including the private two-bedroom Jahazi Suite. Each suite is raised on recycled railway sleeper decking to offer expansive views over the surrounding savannah and riverine environment.

The interiors reflect East Africa’s safari history, featuring rich materials such as thick Lamu wood doors and deep, canvas-canopied ceilings. Comfort is prioritized with a dressing area, private verandah, and a plumbed en-suite bathroom that includes a distinctive copper bath.

Facilities & Experiences

The camp life centres around a main open-fronted lounge and dining tent, also raised on decks, maximizing the forest and plains views. Meals are often enjoyed alfresco on the exterior deck or in a common setting, though private dining can also be arranged.

A library tent offers a quiet space for contemplation. A signature element of the experience is the complimentary use of high-quality professional camera bodies and lenses in every suite, catering directly to keen wildlife photographers.

The Great Plains Foundation sponsors initiatives like the Maasai Olympics to channel the energy of warrior culture into positive conservation goals. The camp also partners with an organization to remove ocean plastic, utilizing their boutique to support global ecosystem restoration.
