About This Lodge

Olkupelia Mara provides a grounded and intimate tented experience within the Olkimatare area of the Maasai Mara. The camp’s identity is defined by its position along the seasonal Olkupelia stream, offering a quiet retreat from the busier sectors of the reserve. The atmosphere is steady and unhurried, focusing on the sensory details of the Mara, the scent of wild sage, the rustle of riverine trees, and the soft golden light over the plains.

It serves as an authentic base for those who value a deep connection to the landscape over large-scale resort features. The experience here is about the subtle rhythms of the wild, providing a private and spacious environment that encourages guests to slow down and observe the natural world at its own pace.

Location & Setting

The camp is situated in the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, positioned on a gentle slope overlooking the Olkupelia drainage line. This geography provides a natural corridor for wildlife moving between the open savannah and the denser vegetation near the water.

The setting is characterized by ancient croton bushes and indigenous trees that offer natural shade and privacy. Access is primarily through the Talek or Sekenani gates for those arriving by road, while fly-in guests use the nearby Ol Kiombo airstrip. The location allows for immediate entry into prime game-viewing circuits without the need for long transit times.

Accommodation

Olkupelia Mara features a small collection of custom-designed safari tents, each elevated on wooden platforms to maximize views and airflow. The interiors avoid clutter, using light canvas, local stone, and reclaimed wood to create a soft, organic feel.

Each tent includes a large sleeping area that opens onto a private veranda, blurring the line between the indoors and the surrounding bush. The ensuite bathrooms provide hot showers and stone-finished vanities, maintaining a balance of comfort and rustic charm. At night, the sound of the stream and distant wildlife creates a natural soundtrack, making the accommodation feel like a true extension of the ecosystem.

Facilities & Experiences

Here, the camp centers on an open-sided lounge and dining area built with natural materials to blend into the treeline. The deck serves as a steady viewing point where guests can watch birds and small mammals in the riverine thicket. Dining is communal yet relaxed, featuring fresh flavors inspired by the region.

In the evenings, a low-impact fire pit provides a space for quiet reflection under the expansive Mara sky. The service is personal and knowledgeable, reflecting a commitment to genuine hospitality. A small, shaded library area offers a place for guests to study the local flora and fauna between excursions.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The camp operates with a philosophy of total integration, where the physical structures are designed to be entirely removable, leaving no permanent footprint on the land. By maintaining a small guest capacity, Olkupelia Mara ensures that the local water table and grazing land remain unstressed. The camp also facilitates a direct “market-to-table” initiative, sourcing seasonal produce exclusively from small-scale Maa growers in the surrounding conservancies, bypassing large commercial supply chains.
