About This Lodge

Primate Safari Lodge is a forest retreat set deep in the heart of Kibale National Park. It serves as a principal base for those focused on studying and observing the park’s dense primate populations. The lodge is defined by its immediate proximity to the park’s starting point for chimpanzee trekking, making the transition from rest to activity nearly seamless.

The atmosphere is steady and quiet, allowing the sounds of the surrounding rainforest to set the day’s rhythm. It provides a practical yet comfortable connection to the wild, focusing on the sensory experience of living under a tropical canopy. The lodge avoids unnecessary complexity, offering instead a reliable and immersive stay for travellers seeking an authentic forest encounter.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated directly within the boundaries of Kibale National Park in western Uganda. This geography places guests in a high-altitude rainforest environment characterised by ancient trees, thick undergrowth, and a vibrant avian population. The terrain is undulating and lush, providing a constant backdrop of deep greens and filtered sunlight.

Access is primarily by road from Fort Portal or via the nearby Kasese airstrip. The setting is secluded and focused, with the lodge’s footprint carefully integrated into the natural forest clearings. Being inside the park ensures that the wild environment begins at the edge of the guest verandas, maintaining a persistent link to the ecosystem.

Accommodation

The lodge features nine luxury cottages and seven standard cottages, along with a unique sky tree house. Each unit is constructed using local materials and designed to maximize the views of the surrounding forest. The luxury cottages are spacious, with large glass windows and private wooden decks that encourage quiet observation of the canopy.

The interiors are simple and functional, using natural textures and earth tones to complement the external environment. The sky tree house, elevated high above the ground, offers a more rugged and intimate connection to the forest life. The focus throughout is on space and privacy, providing a calm sanctuary after a day of forest exploration.

Facilities & Experiences

Central to the lodge is the timber-built lounge and dining area, which features an open fireplace for cooler forest evenings. The design is open-plan, allowing the forest air to circulate freely and keeping guests connected to the outdoors. Dining is a steady and unhurried experience, often featuring local ingredients and traditional Ugandan flavours.

A small library and a terrace provide quiet spaces for reading or birdwatching between treks. The service is knowledgeable and warm, reflecting the lodge’s long-standing connection to the Kibale community. The overall feel is one of a well-established forest home where the primary luxury is the location itself.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge operates a greywater recycling system that ensures all kitchen and laundry runoff is filtered naturally before returning to the forest soil. By using a gravity-fed water supply from a nearby forest spring, the lodge avoids the use of heavy pumping machinery, maintaining the silence of the canopy. This system preserves the delicate moisture balance required by the forest’s epiphytes and mosses.
