About This Lodge

Sweetwaters Serena Camp offers a sheltered tented retreat that combines the traditional ambiance of a safari with the reliability of a full-service hotel. It is defined by its central position around a large, floodlit waterhole that draws wildlife at all hours.

The camp serves as a primary base for exploring the high-density wildlife areas of the conservancy, offering a comfortable and accessible experience that strikes a balance between adventure and modern amenities.

Location & Setting

The camp sits on the open Laikipia plains within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. It is framed by views of Mount Kenya to the south. The immediate grounds are manicured and fenced, creating a secure environment where animals are viewed across the waterhole rather than wandering through the tents.

The location is strategic, sitting in the heart of the conservancy near the equator, allowing for quick access to the main game-viewing circuits and the dedicated rhino sanctuaries.

Accommodation

Sweetwaters is divided into two distinct wings. The Standard Wing features canvas tents under thatched roofs, arranged in rows with views toward the waterhole or the garden. The Morani Wing offers a higher level of comfort with larger, solid-structure tents that include glass doors and upgraded bathrooms.

All units are en suite and feature private verandas. The design prioritizes space and solidity, moving away from a rustic bush feel toward a more permanent, lodge-style tented structure.

Facilities & Experiences

The communal areas focus on the constant activity at the waterhole. The Waterhole Bar acts as a viewing hide where guests can sit with a drink and watch rhinos and zebras just meters away. Dining is a formal affair in the Rhino Room, which offers an international buffet.

A swimming pool provides a place to cool off between drives, while the Maisha Spa offers a range of treatments for relaxation. The atmosphere is social and busy, reflecting the camp’s popularity and size.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The camp is an integral financial pillar for the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, directly funding the protection of East Africa’s largest population of black rhinos. It supports the conservancy’s innovative model of integrating livestock with wildlife, proving that cattle ranching and conservation can coexist. The property also facilitates guest engagement with the Northern White Rhino recovery plan, driving global awareness for species on the brink of extinction.
