Rare Wildlife Sightings
Seek out the species most safaris miss, from wild dog and pangolin to the rarer antelope and primates of Kenya and Uganda.

The experience
Beyond the headline species, East Africa holds wildlife most itineraries never reach: wild dog, pangolin, aardvark, sitatunga, the northern specials of Samburu and the rarer forest primates and antelope.
These sightings come from habitat, guiding and patience rather than season alone. Conservancies with low vehicle numbers, permitted night drives and guides who know individual animals give you a far better chance than a busy reserve.
Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and beisa oryx in the north, and the closely protected rhino populations of Lewa, Ol Pejeta and Solio, are the clearest examples of species tied to specific places.

What to expect
Plan for more days in fewer places, time out with a specialist guide and a willingness to sit with a slow morning. No operator can promise a particular species.
Night drives, walking and off-road access all help, and all depend on being in a conservancy rather than a national reserve.

Timing and arrangements
Varies by species and habitat. Tell us what you are hoping to see and we will say honestly where and when it is realistic, and where it is not.
How long to allow: Across a full itinerary rather than a single activity
Check the activity, location, season and inclusions against your chosen itinerary. An experience described here is not automatically included in every safari.

Before you book
The details that help you decide whether this belongs in your itinerary.
Is this included in every safari?
No. Check your chosen itinerary and final proposal. Optional activities, separate excursions and local operator arrangements should be confirmed before you book.
Where can I arrange rare wildlife sightings?
The linked destinations below show the places supported by JohnBow’s existing catalogue for this experience. Tell us which destination and dates you are considering so we can confirm the actual activity, operator and inclusions.
How long should I allow?
Across a full itinerary rather than a single activity. Check how the activity fits with your accommodation, other excursions and transfers when planning the day.
How do I add it to my itinerary?
Mention this experience in your enquiry, together with your dates, party size and chosen route. We will discuss the relevant programme and make its inclusions clear in the proposal.
