About This Lodge

Julia’s River Camp sits on a quiet bend of the Talek River within the Masai Mara National Reserve. Hidden amidst the savannah, this tented property prioritizes a direct connection to the wilderness, with the riverbank serving as the central focus.

The camp atmosphere is authentic and immersive, divided into three distinct “sub-camps”: Hippo, Buffalo, and VIP, to maintain an intimate feel. It offers a grounded safari experience where the sounds of the bush and the flowing river set the rhythm of the day.

Location & Setting

The camp is located 8 kilometers from the Talek Gate, directly on the banks of the Talek River. The secluded riverside setting allows guests to observe wildlife, such as elephants, buffaloes, and resident hippos, often without leaving the grounds.

Access is typically via a 45-minute flight to the nearby Ol Kiombo or Keekorok airstrips, followed by a short transfer. Alternatively, a 5–to 6–hour road journey from Nairobi brings guests to this remote corner of the reserve.

Accommodation

The property features 28 tents across three sections, all raised on wooden platforms with private verandas facing the river.

  • Hippo Camp: Features dome-style tents for a classic, budget-friendly bush experience.
  • Buffalo Camp: Offers larger “Classic Superior” savannah tents with added shade netting for cooler interiors.
  • VIP Camp: Comprises four extra-large, secluded tents designed for privacy, ideal for honeymooners or small groups.

All tents are en-suite, equipped with solar-powered lighting and hot water, and protected by mosquito netting and canvas walls.

Facilities & Experiences

Each of the three sub-camps has its own dedicated mess tent for dining and relaxation, ensuring a personal atmosphere. Guests can unwind in the common lounge or gather around the evening campfire.

While the focus is on the river, the camp ensures comfort with reliable solar power and wi-fi in public areas. The cuisine emphasizes fresh ingredients, often enjoyed in the open-sided dining tents with views of the riverbank.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The camp’s structure is semi-permanent, designed to be removed without leaving a trace on the environment. It is part of the Kananga portfolio, which maintains a logistical base that supports local employment and ensures that safari vehicles are specially adapted in-house to reduce the need for external, carbon-heavy supply chains.
