About This Lodge

Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp is situated on a private concession bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve. Its name translates to ‘Head of the Elephant’ in Swahili. The camp is situated in a prime location along the Oloololo Escarpment, offering sweeping, dramatic views over the Mara plains.

The atmosphere is one of classic, enduring safari style, featuring spacious communal areas and a rim-flow swimming pool that appears to merge seamlessly with the surrounding savannah. Kichwa Tembo offers a comfortable and high-quality base, placing guests directly along the route of the annual Great Migration.

Location & Setting

The camp is situated on private land leased from Masai landlords, located at the edge of a riverine forest where the Sabaringo River meets the open plains. This strategic position in the Western Mara Triangle area provides guests with access to a high concentration of wildlife and an exclusive game-viewing experience, thanks to the area’s lower visitor numbers.

Access is seamless via the Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, with the camp serving as a destination for fly-in safaris. The camp’s layout ensures that both the communal spaces and many of the tents command unparalleled views of the landscape where the migration passes.

Accommodation

Kichwa Tembo offers 40 spacious tented suites, divided into three categories: Classic Tents nestled in the forest, Superior Tents among shady trees, and Superior View Tents with expansive views of the plains.

All tents feature a generous floor plan, a modern en-suite bathroom, and a private viewing deck. Interiors are simple, elegant, and infused with Maasai-inspired decor, including comfortable, oversized beds. Superior tents include a discrete butler hatch for private morning tea service.

Facilities & Experiences

The main area has a large lounge and dining room designed around an interactive kitchen that emphasizes garden-to-table cuisine. A rim-flow pool is positioned on the edge of the escarpment for spectacular views.

The camp also has a dedicated ‘Wildchild’ program for young travelers and an on-site ‘healing’ massage tent. Each tent is supplied with a complimentary pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars for use during the stay.
