About This Lodge

Kyaninga Lodge is a structural achievement located in western Uganda, set against the backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. The lodge is defined by its hand-carved log architecture and its dramatic position on the edge of a volcanic crater lake. It serves as a gateway to the primates of Kibale National Park while offering a distinct change of pace from the traditional savannah safari.

The atmosphere is one of stillness and verticality, where the altitude provides cool air and clear views across the Albertine Rift. The experience focuses on the intersection of grand craftsmanship and the quiet power of the crater landscape, providing a base that is both physically impressive and deeply relaxing.

Location & Setting

The lodge is built on the rim of Lake Kyaninga, one of the deepest crater lakes in the region. The setting is dominated by the steep slopes of the crater and the distant, often mist-covered peaks of the Mountains of the Moon. The terrain around the lodge is lush and hilly, featuring established gardens and indigenous forest patches.

Located just outside the town of Fort Portal, the lodge occupies a space where agricultural highlands meet the wilder forest ecosystems. This geography allows for a climate that is temperate year-round, making the outdoor decks and walkways a central part of the daily experience.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of eight individual cottages, each constructed from thousands of hand-shaped logs. These units are linked by raised wooden walkways that snake along the crater rim, keeping guests high above the forest floor. Inside, the cottages are expansive, featuring soft furnishings that complement the blonde wood of the walls.

Large glass doors open onto private decks that look directly into the crater or out toward the mountains. The design prioritizes privacy and unobstructed views, with the scent of pine and the sound of birds in the canopy creating a consistent sensory connection to the environment.

Facilities & Experiences

The main lodge building houses a multi-level lounge and dining area anchored by two massive stone fireplaces. A standout feature is the swimming pool, carved into the rock and overlooking the lake, offering a swimming experience that feels integrated into the cliffside. The service is personal and tailored to the needs of those returning from forest treks.

Meals are often sourced from the on-site vegetable garden, emphasizing fresh, local flavors. Guests often spend their time on the terraced lawns or in the library, enjoying the sense of isolation that the high-altitude setting provides. The facility includes a grass tennis court, adding a unique recreational element to the wilderness stay.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge operates the Kyaninga Child Development Centre, which provides specialized therapy and support for children with disabilities in the local region. This facility is a core part of the lodge’s identity, funded directly by guest stays and integrated into the local healthcare network. By focusing on long-term clinical support rather than general donations, the lodge addresses a specific and often overlooked social need within the Fort Portal community.
