About This Lodge

Salt Lick Safari Lodge is a distinctive property built on high stilts, offering a unique perspective over the Taita Hills landscape. Its architectural design consists of several circular towers connected by suspended walkways, creating an elevated environment that prioritizes wildlife observation. The lodge is centered around a series of waterholes that attract a constant flow of animals, particularly large elephant herds and buffalo.

The atmosphere is steady, providing guests with a continuous connection to the movements of the wild from a secure, high-angle vantage point. This stay is less about traditional grounded camping and more about a persistent, panoramic engagement with the surrounding sanctuary. It serves as a reliable and memorable base for those who value seeing nature unfold directly beneath their feet.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated within the private Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a vital corridor between Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks. Geographically, it sits in a semi-arid valley surrounded by the ancient, weathered peaks of the Taita Hills. The terrain is characterized by golden grasslands and scattered acacia trees, with the lodge itself built directly over a natural salt lick and several permanent water sources.

Access is straightforward via the main Nairobi-Mombasa highway, followed by a short drive through the sanctuary plains. Its position ensures that even during the heat of the midday sun, the presence of water keeps the immediate environment active with wildlife activity.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of 96 rooms housed within the elevated circular towers. Each room is designed with a simple, functional elegance that emphasizes the view through large windows. The interiors utilize warm earth tones and natural textures to maintain a sense of calm and comfort. Being raised above the ground, the rooms offer a quiet, private retreat where the sounds of the bush carry clearly through the air.

Each unit features en suite bathrooms and comfortable bedding, ensuring a restful stay. The primary sensory experience is one of suspension; guests fall asleep and wake up to the rhythmic sounds of animals gathering at the waterholes just a few meters below the floorboards.

Facilities & Experiences

Shared life at the lodge revolves around the viewing decks and the terrace bar, all of which overlook the central waterholes. A unique feature is the underground tunnel that leads to a “hide” located at ground level right at the water’s edge, allowing for safe, eye-level photography of elephants.

The dining room offers expansive views of the plains, ensuring that meal times are part of the safari experience. The service is professional and unhurried, reflecting the lodge’s long-standing reputation for hospitality. A terraced lounge provides a communal space for evening relaxation, while the soft lighting used at night ensures that wildlife viewing can continue long after sunset without disturbing the animals.

By maintaining these artificial waterholes within a private sanctuary, the property helps reduce human-wildlife conflict by keeping animal populations away from nearby community farms.
