About This Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge is a large property set on two hundred acres of private land within the Amboseli ecosystem. It is designed to reflect the traditional aesthetics of the local Maasai culture. The grounds are expansive, featuring mature, managed gardens that create a relaxed environment.

The lodge comprises several public areas and accommodation blocks, all built in a simple, open style. Its elevated position provides guests with clear, framed views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated outside the main boundary of Amboseli National Park, near the Kimana Gate, on what was formerly the Kimana Tikondo Group Ranch. This area is renowned for its consistent presence of wildlife outside the park itself. The lodge is reachable by a four-hour road transfer from Nairobi, or a short flight to the Amboseli airstrip followed by an hour’s drive.

The setting is characterized by the backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain and the presence of varied trees and plants, creating habitat for small, resident wildlife like monkeys and impalas that graze in the compound.

Accommodation

The lodge comprises eighty-three guest rooms housed in several scattered cottages. The units are generous in size and are decorated with simple, traditional Maasai-inspired colors and fabrics. Accommodation includes standard twin-bedded or queen rooms.

The property offers six inter-connecting rooms for family use and a honeymoon suite. Every unit features a private veranda offering a stunning view of the surrounding gardens and mountains. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom, a desk, and mosquito netting. Two rooms are specifically designed to be wheelchair accessible.

Facilities & Experiences

The facility features a split-level main area, which includes the Kibo Restaurant and the Mawanzi Terrace. A bridge built over a tranquil fishpond connects the lobby to the dining facilities. The large outdoor swimming pool has a dedicated area for children and is surrounded by a spacious sun deck.

The Hemingway Bar sits on a natural rock boulder, providing a high-point location for evening drinks. An open-air market for local crafts and two conference rooms, accommodating over one hundred delegates, are also available. The lodge operates on a clean, twenty-four hour electrical power system.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge maintains a dedicated, on-site nursery for indigenous tree seedlings. Guests are encouraged to participate in the planting of these native species, and the trees are tagged for future identification and monitoring. The property allocates office space to a local non-governmental organization, ‘Interactions and Solitary,’ which works on social and cultural programs in the neighboring community. The facility actively supports the Big Life Foundation, which conducts anti-poaching and conservation patrols in the greater Amboseli ecosystem.
