About This Lodge

The Ark is a unique, ship-themed lodge located deep within the thick forests of Aberdare National Park. Its architecture is iconic, designed with multiple decks that overlook a large, salt-licked waterhole and a floodlit forest glade. This property is built for observation, offering a steady and immersive wildlife experience where the forest comes to the guest.

The area is quiet and expectant, characterized by the low hum of the forest and the anticipation of nocturnal visitors. It provides a focused, sensory-driven stay that prioritizes the natural drama of the park’s ecosystem, making it a cornerstone for those who appreciate the intricacies of highland wildlife.

Location & Setting

Situated in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, The Ark is surrounded by dense montane forest and bamboo thickets. Its location at a high altitude ensures a cool, misty environment that is distinct from the typical savannah.

The lodge is perched directly over a vital water source, which serves as a magnet for the park’s secretive inhabitants. Access is usually via a transfer from the Aberdare Country Club, ensuring the lodge remains a secluded sanctuary within the deep forest, far from the main park gates and traffic.

Accommodation

The lodge features 60 cabins, all designed to mimic the interior of a ship. The rooms are compact but functional, emphasizing the cozy, protected feel of a vessel in the wild. Each cabin is equipped with a buzzer system to alert guests when rare animals, such as leopards or giant forest hogs, appear at the waterhole during the night.

The décor is simple and rustic, with heavy woods and soft lighting. The experience is intimate; guests are never far from a window or a deck, ensuring a constant visual connection to the forest outside.

Facilities & Experiences

Life at The Ark is centered on its three viewing decks and a ground-level bunker, which allows for eye-level photography of animals at the waterhole. The dining area and lounge are designed to provide panoramic views, ensuring that even during meals, the wildlife spectacle remains the primary focus.

A small library and a cozy bar provide spaces for quiet reflection between sightings. The service is specialized, with dedicated rangers available to explain the forest’s ecology, creating a knowledgeable and authentic environment for nature enthusiasts.

This protects the delicate mountain springs and ensures the salt-lick waterhole remains a healthy, uncontaminated resource for the forest’s endangered black rhino population.
