The Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania works year round, so the useful question is not whether to go but which part of the country suits your dates. The northern circuit, the migration and Zanzibar each have their own rhythm, and they do not always line up.

This guide explains the pattern. For the routes themselves, see Tanzania safaris.

The broad seasonal shape

Tanzania has two rainy periods: the long rains, roughly March to May, and the short rains around November. The dry months either side of them generally mean easier tracks, thinner vegetation and wildlife concentrated near water, which is why they are both the most popular and the most expensive.

The long rains bring the lowest rates and the quietest parks. Some seasonal camps close, and some tracks become difficult, but the country is green and the light is excellent for photography.

The migration moves; it does not have a season

The wildebeest herds are somewhere in the Serengeti ecosystem all year. Broadly, the southern plains hold them earlier in the year around calving, the western and central areas carry them through the middle months, and the north sees the river crossings later. Our year-round migration guide sets this out in detail and is honest about what cannot be predicted.

The practical point is that the part of the Serengeti you should stay in changes with your dates. Booking the wrong sector for the month is a far more common mistake than choosing the wrong month. See migration safaris for routes built around this.

The Ngorongoro Crater

The crater holds a dense resident population and is productive throughout the year, which makes it a reliable anchor whatever your dates. Mornings on the floor are cold, and the descent takes time, so where you sleep on the rim or in Karatu affects how early you get down.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara

Tarangire is at its strongest in the drier months, when elephant and other game concentrate along the river. In the wet season much of that wildlife disperses beyond the park boundary. Lake Manyara is a short, scenic stop that works across the year and pairs naturally with the drive between Arusha and the crater.

Zanzibar

The island is pleasant for most of the year, with the long rains the main exception. If snorkelling or diving matters, the drier months generally give better visibility. Because Zanzibar sits a short flight from the northern circuit, it is easy to add a few nights at the end — tell us how many and we will balance them against the safari portion.

Choosing between Kenya and Tanzania

If your dates are fixed, that often decides the country rather than the other way round. Our Kenya versus Tanzania comparison covers cost, access and timing side by side.

Booking ahead

Camps in the Serengeti and on the crater rim have few rooms and fill early in peak migration months and over the festive period. Earlier enquiries give you a genuine choice of property rather than whatever is left. Send us your travel window and we will tell you honestly which area gives you the best chance.
